BUSINESSLETTER News and Information from the 3D Business World - April 2006
Dear readers,
Each new Bitmanagement software release showcases not only new features but also provides an insight into our overarching company strategy. This is no less the case with the new release 7.0 of our core 3D software platform, BS Contact VRML/X3D (see below). Readers will note that BS Contact has become not only a more universal platform, but also more 3D and multimedia application oriented, with native support for viewing a rich variety of 2D and 3D media file types. Bitmanagement is focused squarely within this market trend of integrated multimedia application development, a trend that, incidentally, was confirmed by a recent survey conducted by the VDI (The Association of German Engineers).
We offer customers and developers a complete solutions palette from simple 2D/3D visualization right through to highly integrated multimedia applications development. Whether it is for process simulation, construction, architecture, medical technology or applications for mobile devices, immersive displays or the Internet – each of these application areas and deployment options can now profit more comprehensively from our 3D software solutions. Our tailored, market-centric software products are called BS Contact Geo, BS Contact Mobile, BS Contact Stereo and so on, to meet the individual needs of customers working within highly specialized fields. With this ongoing evolution of our product line based on the core BS Contact platform we are committed to exceeding the technical requirements of these diverse markets and our existing customers to become the undisputed frontrunner.
Yours Peter Schickel Chief Executive Officer

New method for limitless image quality on 3D screens.
The Hamburg based hardware and software company n4 dimensions GmbH, has succeeded for the first time in producing an image quality on stereoscopic screens which has, to date, never before been matched by traditional engineering processes. This breakthrough in the stereoscopic rendition of 3D images was due to the development of a new screen technology by n4 dimensions, enabling sharp stereoscopic imaging independent of resolution, teamed with the 3D visualization software BS Contact Stereo developed by Bitmanagement. BS Contact more than met the high performance and precision requirements of n4 dimensions. Unlike other 3D displays, the n4 dimensions user is free to move in relation to the display as it adapts its 3D stereo characteristics in real-time based on the user’s changing position. n4 dimensions anticipates wide application for their technology – anywhere in fact where high 3D image quality is demanded, as for example in the medical care arena.

Tomorrow’s IT applications offer full multimedia services.
The VDI (The Association of German Engineers) recently conducted a member survey, which canvassed responses from approximately 1700 engineers and computer scientists. The aim was to discover which IT segments, in the opinions of the respondents, show the strongest growth potential over the coming decade. 51% of the respondents expected that multimedia applications would top the growth charts, with embedded systems coming in at a respectable 42%. Mobile media (Internet/TV/music) solutions followed with 40%, telecommunications applications with 33%, whilst RFID (radio frequency ID – ‘smart’ barcodes), a technology much in the news of late, scored 31%. Internet-based services came in at 30%, whereas knowledge cross-linking, virtual products and process development were recorded from 25% of the responding engineers.

Forerunner of convergent 3D and multimedia on mobiles.
The BenQ Siemens EF91 mobile is the first mobile phone in the world to support the HSDPA (High-Speed Download Packet Access) protocol. This innovative transmission technique significantly increases the speed of mobile data transfer. 3D graphics, pictures, video and music are transported at five times the speed of conventional UMTS mobile phones. Crisp, high quality live video can be viewed and 3D surround audio clips listened to in real-time, streamed directly over the Internet.

Bitmanagement to introduce physics to BS Contact.
Bitmanagement is presently integrating a physics engine into its 3D visualization software BS Contact VRML/X3D, targeting compatibility with both the VRML Classic and XML encodings of X3D. The company plans to contribute and adhere to evolving X3D standards that aim to provide a generic, standardized and consistent physics component interface to a variety of physics engines. Physics capability will enable Bitmanagement to make further inroads into the important CAD visualization and scientific simulation sectors, wherein physically correct object collision, interaction, precise measurements and the like are critical. This development is also an important step toward the game market, which offers unique challenges in realistically depicting the motion of dynamic game entities such as vehicles, particles, projectiles and the like.

New business models on the Web.
So-called “Mashups” offer completely new online business concepts. Mashups aggregate diverse content from various websites and services to create new hybrid web applications. According to Wirtschaftswoche (a German weekly business magazine), at present the most frequented application of this type is GoogleEarth. This has been further extended and referenced by third party real estate websites, which can now offer significantly more information to prospective customers than existing concepts. Such websites combine text and photographic advertisements for housing with syndicated content from services like GoogleEarth and GoogleMaps, within one easily searchable and consistent user interface. In this way, prospective home buyers can not only view their future home, but also explore its geographic context and discover for themselves what a particular area may be like given the proximity of essential services such as parks, schools, kindergartens, shopping centers, transport infrastructure etc – all before making that final crucial decision to buy or to rent.

Closing Remarks
The recent invitation from the German aerospace company (DLR) for Bitmanagement to attend the GMOS Workshop came as no surprise to us. The event focused on the topic of “Crisis Scenarios” and their management. This is a timely topic indeed given the unfortunate frequency of major disasters, both natural and manmade, that authorities around the globe are expected to respond effectively to.
The application of modern technologies can assist emergency services in identifying the source and scope of the problem, analyzing its potential impact and communicating directly with first-response personnel in order to seize the initiative and rapidly apply the most appropriate preventative or counter measures. Geographic information systems (GIS) and full-spectrum communication systems now form the core of this effective crisis response, as examples from France and elsewhere have clearly demonstrated. But the tremendously large GIS data sets required to gain a complete understanding of a crisis still represent a major challenge.
How can one reliably transmit and interactively display such large data sets in time and mission-critical scenarios? The answer is obvious: Via the Internet to consumer-level PC hardware. Software such as BS Contact can display large geo data sets in real-time 3D but the World Wide Web has serious bandwidth limitations, which are further hampered by unpredictable fluctuations in network traffic. A new business model now aims to make vast quantities of geographic information "Internet digestible" for rapid and secure transmission to where it is needed. This seems like a very small contribution to the security and stability of the world but, in fact, it is a vital and timely element in our overall capacity to respond to crises, where and whenever they occur.
With Kind Regards Axel Koerfer
