Dear reader,
3D applications increasingly accelerate. Whether the CAD software industry, the GIS branch or our research projects
like FINE, InterAR and OGC Open GIS project or the booming market for new mobile devices, 3D realtime and online
capable software gets integrated.
Recently Bitmanagement announced that we have successfully ported our BS Contact C++
rendering engine from Windows on Mac and Linux systems as well as on Apple’s IOC devices like the iPhone 3GS, iPhone4,
iPad 1 + 2, and iPods. Moreover BS Contact now supports the major browsers including IE, Google Chrome and Opera on Windows
and Safari on Mac – 3D realtime software – crossplatform and crossbrowser. m

1. Release 8.0 of “BS Contact” announced; Request for Beta Tester
Bitmanagement is looking for beta testers for the new release of BS Contact in Q4. Over the last year since version 7.2 we have been restructuring BS Contact with an eye on speed gains and visual quality. The result is a state of-the-art BS Contact Version 8.0 which is multi-threaded and thus does many rendering tasks in parallel. Such as script sharing that squeezes out a lot of frames for heavy scripting applications.
Among the new functionality range 64 bit support of all BS Contact renderers, also Stereo and GEO, windowless rendering, geometry instancing, multipath transparency, Multi-User support of SUN Red Dwarf server, intelligent proto deletion, a new render initialization, orthographic view, generalization of shadows and dedicated support of the new Intel Sandy bridge boards.
So, please send an e-mail to info(at)bitmanagement.com, if you want to be among the first to test version 8 with your own content.

2. Cross Browser Javascript for installation of “BS Contact”, including Mac
In order to install “BS Contact” as easy as possible across internet browsers,
a cross-browser JavaScript to check the installed version of BS Contact is provided.
This script gives third party developers the possibility to check the installed version
of the BS Contact 3D viewer against the latest available version of BS Contact provided,
e.g. at the Bitmanagement Download Center.

4. Custom File Format – “free“ 3D Viewer based on your own 3D file format
Suppose you have an application that produces 3D models that you want to save to disk and hand out to people.
The people should be able to view the models and interact with them, but they should not be able to examine the
inner nuts and bolts of your models, modify them or integrate them into their own 3D applications.
You want to have control over what the users can do with your 3D models. In this case a custom file format
(your own 3D file format) will help you to offer a 3D Viewer "free" for your enduser.

5. Deferred Rendering
The times of baked shadows and pre-rendered lighting effects in computer graphics have gone. Today advanced shading techniques are possible in BS Contact – in real-time.

6. General Floor Shadow
Did you ever worked with our cascading shadows from the 7.2 release of BS Contact?
In order to make it easier to produce shadows of arbitrary models on the floor we have come up
with a more generalized method to cast shadows with blurry effects.
The new node is called ShadowFloor() and you can simply set it for a whole object.

7. X3D Binary Paper to be presented at Web3D Conference in Paris - 10 times faster
The new paper describes the geometry and texture coding work as done in the European R&D project FINE.
The main topic is the implementation of the X3D compressed binary encoding standard.
First results show that an appropriate example 3D scene could be reduced from 4.2 MB to 428 kb using
a combination of X3D binary encoding and gzip compression resulting in 10 times higher transmission speed.

8. BS Exporter for 3ds max update
It is very handy to export entire 3D scenes created with 3dsmax with just a few clicks to VRML/X3D. The BS Exporter that does this job has been updated to reflect the latest versions of 3dsmax up to version 12 and even in 64 bit.
Special emphasis has been laid on the export of large scale city content in the update. As vast structures of complete architectural scenes can bring 3dsmax to its limits for previewing inside the program, designers can now easily view this content exported from 3dsmax with the real-time capabilities of the BS Contact rendering engine with interactive frame rates.

9. Get graphic card capabilities of the web user client hardware
Just check out what is possible at your users PC. Use fallbacks in your content and you can present your work optimized according to the possibilities of your users. With the command Browser.getCap(id) you can get the capabilities of the current client machine.

12. SDK (Software Development Kit) from Bitmanagement reworked
The SDK has been reworked with many new features and examples. The SDK documentation consists of about 950 pages,
tools for download and source pieces for programming. Almost all customers acquire BS SDK Package as “Starter Set”
for usage of interactive online capable 3D software. The reworked SDK will be released Q4 and a free update for existing customers.

13. Book - Security in Virtual Worlds - X3D for security in virtual worlds
The generation of encrypted and signed X3D binary files is demonstrated according to the XML Security Recommendation of
the W3C consortium. In a practical session the appliance of security approaches to concrete X3D implementation projects
is described from the perspective of Bitmanagement.

14. maila-push founder and former CEO Kim Jung-Grüttner cooperates with Bitmanagement
Kim Jung-Grüttner and Bitmanagement agreed on a collaboration for creation of high precision 3D models of cities or construction concepts to be presented
by online capable realtime 3D rendering technology “BS Contact”. Mr. Jung-Grüttner with his focus on sales and content approach together
with crossplatform/crossbrowser software from Bitmanagement will target the ongoing trend of increasing demand for geo- und city visualization.
visitcity (as mentioned one below) is a natural fit here.

15. visitcity portal is getting threedimensional, interactive and mobile
The geo-portal for cities and companies has been completely reengineered based on the actual Bing Maps API by Bitmanagement
and is launching its new website with full testing possibilities of the solution. New functionality like navigation or precise
Geo-coding by Intergraph have been added. In addition to the 2D visualization approach as is, visitcity will focus on 3D,
online interactivity and mobile usage.

16. Spatial Corp. deploys 3D viewer from Bitmanagement - 3D online visualization of CAD data
Spatial Corp., Broomfield, Colorado, USA, as one of the leaders in the CAD field and as subsidiary of
Dassault Group France now presents online ready solutions in the internet. For it Spatial deploys
a customized version of BS Contact as an interactive front end which in this case exclusively
is applied as OpenGL version with the objective of reducing the download size of ActiveX.
The ActiveX Control from Spatial simply needs 3 MB.

17. Master thesis in Augmented Reality for GIS application – based on X3D rendering
Augmented Reality is a form of Man-Machine-Interaction in which the user gets various contextual information in his/her field of vision. Displays on modern Tablet-PCs could be used as a window into the world. For land or ground consolidation, a live video image can be augmented by existing functional geodata for exploring e.g. geometrical data and textual information on nature’s protection.
Bitmanagement supports this work by providing its software including the BS SDK – as augmented reality gets more and more interesting in research and in real world markets
